Interesting. I'm currently running a couple of jessie vserver guests
without systemd on a wheezy host, and that's working fine, as stated in the
initial post. I haven't tried upgrading the host yet. I was hoping I could
run standard jessie with systemd on the host.

If you run systemd on the host and the guest, no special capabilities
added, and stop the guest, the host looses /dev, /proc and /sys.
My current workaround is to not use systemd on host/guest.
