'plain' init style means that util-vserver starts a guest init
(in your case upstart), which handles all the further service
startups. with the init stule missing, util-vserver falls back
to the 'sysv' init style, which means that there will be no guest
init (only a fake, blend through version of the host's init
is shown) and util-vserver will execute the runlevel scripts
on startup and shutdown.
