as a data point, my test machine:
 * debian 5.0.5/"lenny"
 * linux 2.6.32.15-vs2.3.0.36.29.4
 * util-vserver 0.30.216-pre2864-2 (backported from testing/squeeze)

my server is:
 * debian 5.0.5/"lenny"
 * linux 2.6.27.47-vs2.3.0.36.9
 * util-vserver 0.30.216~r2772-6 (plus a patch to fix cgroup support)

my previous experience is with my server, so i'm 99.9% sure it works there,
but my previous demonstration was on my test machine.
