Thanks. In latest Feodra (fedora 12 atleast),upstart replaces inittab.
Upstart too executes /etc/rc.d/rcN.d depending on the system runlevel.

I don't know about upstart, the classic VServer startup just executes
everything in /etc/rcN.d, might work similar for upstart if the tools
are aware about upstart. There is no 'init' as such and so no inittab is
ever read/used.
