Sorry, I should clarify: this has been working fine for the last,
umm, 

 04:33:26 up 109 days,  6:00,  2 users,  load average: 2.67, 2.51, 2.85

107 days or so.  :)

I have no idea what changed.  The only thing that comes to mind was
an apt-get upgrade on the master host, which is Debian stable.
