You figured it out already, but this should probably get a bigger 
warning, but with hardened you need the more recent dietlibc

I think it's probably worth submitting a bug report on bugs.gentoo.org.  
Solution is to add a dependency on that newer dietlibc if USE="hardened" 
is set.
