That was the problem. I used
rsync --numeric-ids -a -e ssh v74 root@li:/var/lib/vservers
in the past, tar only locally (as a backup). Just copied over by
rsync, no problems. I presume the tar --numeric-ids and --preserve-permissions
would have worked as well.

Failed to initialize unification for vserver
Is there a trick to it? Needs more than one vserver in
the target partition?
