Can you do a normal chroot /VSERVE ROOT DIR /bin/bash

and get a shell? From there if yes have a look at the root filesystem to
see any strange.

I had this behaviour in 2 cases:
- wrong barrier flags
- incompatible architecture, e.g. 64-bit guest on a 32-bit kernel.
